In listening to our community this year, we know we’re not the only ones having a hard time waking up and getting out of bed some mornings. Hard times call forth new rituals, and these are some of ours. This Rise & Shine gift set includes one of our Rise & Shine body soaps and one of our Spirit Lifter massage oils that come either in a Silly Dog Studios gift bag or in a winter holidays box:
- Our Rise & Shine soap holds our own grown-at-Silly Dog Studios calendula and dandelion flowers, rosemary, spearmint, and peppermint, plus a bit of yellow clay softness and a few drops of peppermint essential oil to help wake the body up in the morning. We like to use the soap as a body soap in the shower, keeping its lovely and uplifting peppermint away from our eyes.
- Our Spirit Lifter massage oil holds our own roses, calendula, and spearmint plus local windfall cottonwood buds infused into organic extra virgin olive oil. This oil loves skin and works in slowly. We like to massage a bit of Spirit Lifter massage oil into our temples, jawline, neck, shoulders, arms, and hands in the morning, especially on gray mornings when we really don't feel like getting up. The embrace of local plants and flowers as our friends and allies feels especially helpful on gray days. I refill these bottles for about half price ($13) out of my studio here on Whidbey.
The gift set comes with a Silly Dog Studios gift bag, which is a made-from-recycled-materials kraft paper bag with our adorable logo on the front and holiday green tissue paper. It ships in a brown cardboard box. For an additional $5 we will ship it in a festive winter holidays gift box (with images of green and white evergreen branches, holly branches, and pine cones on the box--see photo).
Whidbey folks, you can choose the Pick Up option to avoid shipping costs at check out, and you can pick up from our herbal studio here. We can ship priority in the continental US until December 15, 2021 to get this gift to someone in time for Christmas. If there's another winter holiday you're aiming for (hurray for Diwali, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, and Boxing Day!), please allow 10 calendar days for shipping in the continental US. It likely won't take that long but we don't want to disappoint you if the post office decides to take its sweet time!
Supply is limited.
Storage and life of the products: To extend the life of the soap bar, store it where it can dry quickly after use and where it doesn't get regular spray from the faucet. Unused, soap bars will last a very long time, likely longer than you and me. ;-) Store the massage oil in a cool, dark place, on a hard surface you don’t mind getting a little oil on, and away from direct sunlight. Best to use the massage oil within 12 to 18 months of purchase because the only preservative is the nature of the plants (especially the cottonwood buds) themselves.
Size of soap bar: Roughly 4 ounce bars. These are made by hand in small batches and hand cut by cool women, not machines. This means most bars are 4 ounces and that the bars can range from 3.7 ounces to 4.5 ounces, most are 4 or more. We keep anything smaller than that for ourselves and our families, and to give as gifts to neighbors in need (last year it was soaps to a local homeless shelter and to frontline healthcare workers at my mom's memory care home), and to cut up and give as free surprises and samples to those who buy our products. We're not machines, people, nor do we want to be. :-)
Ingredients in the:
- Rise & Shine soap (~4 ounces): Whidbey-grown (at Silly Dog Studios) dandelion flowers, rosemary, spearmint & peppermint infused in organic olive oil, shea butter, organic coconut oil, castor oil, distilled water, sodium hydroxide, sodium lactate, yellow clay, ground Whidbey calendula flowers (from Silly Dog Studios), peppermint essential oil.
- Spirit Lifter massage oil (4-ounce bottle): Whidbey-grown (at Silly Dog Studios) rose petals and buds, calendula flowers, and spearmint plus local windfall black cottonwood buds (harvest from trusted friends' farms after winter wind storms) infused into organic extra virgin olive oil for 6 weeks to 6 months, depending on the plant.
Packaging: Massage oils come in reusable, clear glass bottles with screw-top metal lids. This one is a 4-ounce bottle. I refill these bottles for about half price ($13) out of my studio here on Whidbey. Soaps come wrapped in a small piece of food-safe, compostable parchment paper. Recycle the paper or better yet, rip it into pieces and compost the paper as a good "brown" in your compost bin/pile. Our Silly Dog Studios gift bags are made of recycled materials and can be reused, recycled, or shredded into compost. The winter holiday boxes are from Papermart. They are made of 80-90% post consumer recycled paper and printed with non-toxic inks. They can be reused or recycled too.

I'm an herbalist like my grandmother before me, and I am interested in community, planetary, personal, emotional, and spiritual wellness. I have a doctorate degree in education (EdD). I am not a medical doctor or a scientist, nor have I been pregnant or raised children. I lean on ever-deepening relationships with local forests, plants and herbs and flowers and lichen, local wise women, ancestors, other herbalists, insects, birds, and I love learning traditional folk ways from people who love to share them across old boundaries, every chance I get. I intentionally study forests and plants directly, plus community wellness and connectedness, resilience, self-organizing groups, playfulness and deep fun, and life as experienced by those with different ancestors than my own--because I believe these are what we need to learn more about right now.
